Who invented the sport lacrosse?

I’ve been reading about lacrosse and learned it has deep historical roots. I’m curious about its origins and who first created or developed the game. Can anyone explain how lacrosse started and who is credited with inventing it?

Lacrosse isn't the brainchild of just one individual; it actually has its roots in Native American tribes, particularly the Haudenosaunee. They played the game centuries ago as a way to connect spiritually and to train. It wasn't until the 19th century that Europeans stepped in to organize and standardize the modern version of the game. Nowadays, lacrosse has become a beloved sport across North America and even beyond.

Lacrosse was originally created by Indigenous peoples of North America centuries ago. Native communities used the game for training, recreation, spiritual ceremonies, and conflict resolution. French settlers later named the sport “lacrosse” after noticing similarities between the stick and a bishop’s staff. Modern lacrosse has evolved into organized field, box, and women’s versions played worldwide. The sport remains culturally important to many Indigenous communities today.
